Gifts that keep on giving!

Considering a gift for the foster or adoptive family you support? We have a few ideas that may be the gift that keeps on giving!

  • Weighted blanket - Check with your family to find out if their child could benefit from a weighted blanket! These blankets are calming for many people because they provide deep muscle pressure.
  • Weighted lap animal - Similar to a weighted blanket, the weighted lap animals are soothing and can help with regulation. These weighted items are made by a man in Denver who has Autism and his Occupational Therapist.
  • Bean bag chair - Another calming tool to help kids from hard places  feel contained and safe in their surroundings.

  • Books - Connected Child, by Dr. Karyn Purvis & Dr. David Cross; Understanding your Baby/Child’s Sensory Signals, by Angie Voss, OTR; Everyday Games for Sensory Processing Disorder: 100 Playful Activities to Empower Children with Sensory Differences, by Barbara Sher; Coloring books for kids and Adults!
  • Membership to a museum or recreation center pass - Depending on the kids’ interests, providing a membership for the family to do activities together could be a great way to continue to build attachment.
  • Make the family a coupon book of services - Include things that you are willing to do for a family like folding laundry, shoveling snow, bringing a meal, or providing a few hours of child care.
  • Family games - There are some pretty zany games out there these days! Finding a light-hearted, non-competitive game that will bring about laughing together might be the greatest gift you could give. Examples include Speak Out or Beard Ball.

At the end of the year, many people are considering places to give financially. Project 1.27 provides faith-based training and experienced support for foster and adoptive families throughout Colorado. We are also launching a new initiative to help churches in our state become foster and adoption friendly. Your gifts contribute directly to train and support more foster families and churches to meet the needs of the kids in our own backyards. Help us foster love in 2019!
